A night at The Great House at Sonning

First Impressions

I was very excited to stay at The Great House at Sonning as the previous summer I had stayed at their sister hotel, The Swan at Streatley and it was amazing. The hotel is just off the M4 near Reading, so it’s easy for most people to get to and there are lots of things to see and do around the local area, making it a perfect place to visit for a night or two. The hotel is situated in the heart of Sonning which is a beautiful village full of character and charm and has been described as ‘the most fairy-like little nook on the whole river.’ The hotel is very stylish with great interior design in every room so I knew I would instantly fall in love with the place and couldn’t wait to check into our room.

Interiors

Prepare to want to redecorate your house after a stay here as every corner is filled with beautiful colours, designs, and the comfiest soft furnishings. Our room was full of fun touches like the retro fridge and dial-up telephone which gives the room lots of character. The bathroom is very sleek with grey tiles lining the floor and walls and silver and marble details from the taps and worktops add a splash of luxury. The on-site restaurant Coppa Club carries on this attention to detail with charming patterned sofas in the bar area for you to relax on with a glass of fizz or maybe a good book.

Rooms

We stayed in the Coach House Apartment which Is situated outside of the main hotel. Straight away you head upstairs to a landing with 3 separate rooms. To the right is the gorgeous bathroom which not only has a rainfall shower but a fabulous bathtub that takes center stage. The bathroom is filled with products from the Natural Spa Company which all smell incredible that I just had to have a soak in them. To the left on the landing is a cosy living room where you can spend your evenings relaxing and watching your favourite films. Up a few more steps is the bedroom where you are welcomed by a huge and unbelievably comfy bed. The pillows and duvet are filled with fluffy feathers to make you dream the night away in absolute bliss.

They offer various rooms from cosy double, riverside view suites and family rooms so depending on your budget and whose coming with you, you can find the perfect room to stay in.

Dining

Once we had checked in, we headed to the Coppa Club restaurant which is next to the hotel. The weather was lovely so we decided to sit outside and have a few cocktails which is the perfect setting as it’s next to the river Thames. The restaurant is so beautifully decorated with lots of cosy corners filled with brightly coloured and patterned sofa, and a fabulous decking that was giving me Ibiza vibes. We enjoyed the Garlic Bread to start whilst we had some drinks and the corn-fed half chicken and Tender Stem Broccoli for our mains. The following morning, we made the walk back to the Coppa Club for breakfast which again didn’t disappoint. I had the Buckwheat and Rye Pancakes with berries, granola, seeds, and coconut yoghurt which was full of flavour and a great way to start my morning.

Overall Impression

Overall, I absolutely loved our stay here and would highly recommend it for anyone who is looking to escape for a night or two. It’s a great place to visit with friends, the family, or your partner as they offer various rooms depending on who you are bringing (some are dog-friendly too) and your budget. The location is perfect, whether you want to do some shopping, exploring the local countryside and towns, go on a cruise down the Thames, or sip cocktails all day long. You won’t be disappointed when you book a night here.

Nearby

Berkshire is a county in south-East England and is full of diverse places to visit from bustling towns to rolling hills and winding paths through woodlands to riverside pubs. If you are looking to explore the countryside, eat in some fancy restaurants and shop in some lovely towns that are full of wonderful shops, then I would definitely suggest a weekend along the Thames.

My top places to visit are:

  • Eton
  • Goring
  • Henley-on-Thames
  • Hurley
  • Marlow
  • Sonning
  • Streatly
  • Windsor
