A night at The Univerity Arms, Cambridge

First Impressions

We decided to stay at the University Arms, due to its central location but also as the interiors inside looked fabulous, and it’s safe to say we weren’t disappointed. The historic hotel was Voted “City Hotel of the Year 2018” by The Sunday Times and has gone on to win many more awards, and it’s not hard to see why. The grand entrance makes you feel you have arrived at a grand country estate, not a city hotel and you are instantly welcomed by Porters who can assist you with your luggage. The smell of the hotel was the first thing we noticed and it was an incredible scent of Lavender, Ylang Ylang, Geranium, and Sweet Orange. We later found you could buy the diffuser to get that hotel feeling back at home which is a great touch.

Interiors

Expect quirky, electric, luxury furnishings throughout the hotel as every corner is filled with stylish elements. It’s wonderful to see that they have kept so many original features in the building but blended in modern elements, to make it a fabulous place to stay. The touch of Edwardian interiors with bespoke soft furnishings such as the leather-padded writing desks, low ottomans, and tiered chandeliers bring a sense of glamour to the hotel. You will want to dress up when staying here to feel as elegant as the hotel but don’t worry they haven’t compromised on comfort, which makes it a perfect place to stay.

Dining

The hotel is home to Parker’s Tavern, Tristan Welch’s quintessentially British brasserie, which has rapidly established itself as the city’s hottest bar and dining experience. The bar is an amazing place to go and sip cocktails and people watch before heading to their restaurant for some delicious dishes of homemade spaghetti, Roast rib of beef cooked over coals for two, and Honey and thyme slow roast norfolk duck. If you don’t want dinner then make sure you treat yourself to afternoon tea or even one of their picnics in the park for a whimsical, charming experience. As we stayed over the Coronvirus Pandemic, we had to leave restaurants at 10pm, however we still wanted a few drinks to celebrate our weekend away. Luckily for us, they were providing curfew cocktails where you could get drinks and snacks to your room to carry on the evening in style.

Rooms

The hotel offers 192 individually designed en-suite bedrooms and suites; from cosy doubles, Superior rooms, to suites with a beautiful terrace and roll-top bath. So whatever your budget or reason for staying you can splash out as much as you like. The Bathrooms come with an amazing range of D.R.Harris & Co products which you will definitely want to take home with you and heated floors and an incredible rain shower. They also provide a generous selection of coffee and tea, 42-inch flat-screen TVs, and when we stayed, due to the Coronavirus, we received little packs with hand sanitiser and a face mask in which was a great touch.

Overall Impressions

If you are wanting a bit of luxury, then I can’t recommend University Arms enough, from the decor to the service, food, and whole experience, it really was a 10/10 stay. The curfew cocktails were a great touch and we loved hiring their beautiful bikes to cycle around the city like a local. Cambridge makes for a perfect staycation with so many wonderful things to see and do and University Arms is the perfect base. I will definitely be returning here and can’t wait for our next stay here.

Nearby

Whether you want to explore museums and universities, spend your day shopping in the high street shops and local boutiques or live like a local and cycle around the cobbled streets, there are lots of wonderful things to do no matter what your interests are or who your travel companion is.

You cant come all the way to Cambridge and not go punting, and there are so many companies offering your trips up and down the river that even on a busy summer’s day, you will be sure to find someone that can take you. If you are looking for a real treat though, head to Rutherford’s who offers some amazing experiences from cream tea, pizza, and champagne date night punts.
