How to holiday in Mykonos: The Ultimate Guide

Mykonos is one of the most famous and popular Greek Islands and it’s not hard to see why. Sat on the beautiful Aegean Sea, Mykonos offers amazing beaches, picturesque villages and delicious Greek food. It’s also popular for its great nightlife with some of the chicest and glamorous beach side bars and nightclubs too. Whether you want to spend your time lounging around the pool and admiring the view, exploring the island by quad bike or even Island hopping there is so much to keep everyone entertained and best of all, in the most charming setting.

Where you should stay

When we visited we stayed at Aletro Cottage Houses. They are a 4-star hotel full of luxury touches and have the most sophisticated interiors both inside your accommodation and poolside. They are situated around a mile out of the town so you get the best of both worlds. It’s easy to walk or get a taxi in and out of Mykonos town but you get the benefits of not only a great view out to sea but the peace and quiet too. We stayed in a superior sea view room and were lucky enough to have a whole cottage to ourselves. They are self-catering, so you get a kitchen to rustle up food, but breakfast is included and you won’t want to miss that. Around the pool, there is a selection of sun loungers, seating areas and bean bags which gave us the vibes of a luxury hotel in Ibiza.

Other places to stay:

The best places to eat

Be prepared to be spoilt for choice when it comes to restaurants. Around the Island there are so many places to eat, whether you want to watch the sunset, admire a view or people-watch in a square. We visited various restaurants that all provide different cuisines, from Mediterranean, Italian and obviously traditional Greek food.

Cocktail time

Mykonos is known for its great night life, so there is no end of places to visit for a cocktail. If you like to have a drink by the water and watch the sun set then make sure to visit Little Venice. There are multiple bars lining the water and all offer various drinks and some provide food too. If your looking to spend your time partying, dancing to a DJ set and all in the most gorgeous bohemian settings, then any one of their beach front bars are for you. If you are in Mykonos in the summer months, I would definitely recommend booking bars and restaurants as it gets very busy and you don’t want to miss out.

Exploring Mykonos and beyond

No matter your interest, there is plenty to see and do when you holiday to Mykonos. You can spend your days lounging around the pool, or head to one of their fabulous beaches for a day by the sea. If you want to explore the island then the best way to do this would be to hire quad bikes. There are plenty of places that offer them and this way you can see the island at your own pace and find some hidden gems. Make sure you spend some time walking around the cobbled street of Mykonos town. Here you will find beautiful white washed houses, chic shops to visit and plenty of restaurants and bars. If you want to explore further afield, then there are many islands you can visit for the day or why not extend your trip and island hop. Islands we would recommend visiting are; Paros, Naxos, Syros, Milos and Santorini. Be sure to check at the old or new port what the ferry days and times are, as depending on the season will change how frequently they go to other islands.
